What if the Economy Doesn’t Recover?

Lately I’ve been hearing people say, “I don’t think the economy will ever go back to the way it was before the crash,” and “We need to talk about a ‘new economy’ rather than an economic recovery.” Well, I’m no economist and I am certainly no politician, but I do consider myself to be quite informed on the subject of money.

For example, I know exactly what it feels like to have to pull your kid out of a private school that he loves and put him into a public school that he hates. I know what it feels like to not have the money to throw your children the kind of birthday party they are used to having – not even a cake, never mind any presents. I am quite familiar with that churning feeling in the stomach when you nervously check your bank balance only to confirm your worst fears – yes you ARE overdrawn and yes they DID help themselves to $180 in overdraft fees that you obviously couldn’t afford. And I am very familiar with being a one-car, five-person family.

I’m not telling you this so you’ll feel sorry for us – hey – the bad days are over for us (touch wood). I’m saying this because so many people are really suffering financially right now, and doing what I call ‘clinging and swinging’ – clinging to false hopes that ‘things will get back to normal soon’ and swinging from bits and pieces of income to more bits and pieces of income – hopefully.

We decided early on to be very proactive. After we lost everything to the property crash (no – we were not THAT proactive, unfortunately) we decided it might be time to completely change our lives. Get back to basics, pare things down, slash the overhead, simplify and focus on what was really important – our family and our future.

After some research, and watching our marketing business contract instead of expand like it should have done, we decided it was time to take matters into our own hands and build our OWN retirement income, because no one else was going to do it for us.

The criteria for our financial exit strategy were:

there would be absolutely no dependence on the government for anything,

the product or service we pursued as a business would NOT be subject to regulation by any government,

there would be no limit to the income we could make if we worked hard,

working for other people as employees was definitely not an option,

we had to be passionate about the product – it had to improve peoples’ lives,

and the time limit to accomplish our (ambitious) retirement income goals would take no longer than 3-5 years.

We chose Send Out Cards. Who’s going to regulate greeting cards? Who doesn’t love sending cards and gifts? It’s something we all have to do. The compensation plan is great and the time factor for building wealth is actually real.

Now, 21 months later, our part-time efforts are paying off and we are right on track with our plan. We are happy. We want you to be happy too.

Living Your Dream is FUN!

While we may not have the outer appearances of ‘wealth’ in some peoples’ book, we are rich in happiness since following (or is it ‘leading’?) our dream to focus on building our greeting card business and helping others do the same.

We know the wealth is on its way, and in the meantime, the income is coming along very nicely! It’s wonderful to be able to be able to pay all your bills on time without worrying about where the money is coming from.

We know we have a way to go in order to achieve our particular income goals (they are BIG!) but Wayne and I are having so much fun showing people how to send REAL greeting cards with their own photos and wonderful clip art, borders and layouts – I can’t STAND how much fun this is!

My Dream Lifestyle – By Diana Rosenfield

Reading a book set in Japan, and caught up in the descriptions of the exotic foreign land, my five year old and I decide to plot our own journey there. Because we own our home mortgage-free, and because my husband and I make a living on the residual income from our artistic pursuits without the straight-jacket of a 9-5 work schedule, and because our children don’t attend school and are not bound to that schedule, we are able to plan and pay for the trip, and spend a good three weeks living in that culture.

At last we return to our home, reflecting that as wonderful as Japan is, nothing compares to the four walls of your own home. Only our home doesn’t have walls because it is a yurt comprised of a one-room canvas circle topped by a domed roof and the whole house glows with sunlight each day.

Outside our mountain home is a spectacular view of fiery autumn trees and a sparkling waterfall. All around there are fruit trees heavy with their fall bounty. The air is fresh, and we find ourselves at once invigorated and relaxed, inspired to leap into new artistic endeavors, pursuits of invention, or the swimming hole (respectively).

First, we must unpack from our adventure, and we do so quickly and easily because we have intentionally left the souvenirs in Japan, and didn’t bring many things with us. Drawers and baskets and racks for clean and soiled clothes are age appropriate and easy to manage, so all the children cheerfully dispose of the contents of their bags and quickly become engaged in the activities that have caught their interest. Even the baby seems eager to get to work.

The furnishings around us are sparse, wooden, and handmade by my husband with unique details and embellishments. Toys are wood, cloth, and wool; decorations wax, paper, and wicker. Beds are colorful hammocks, and bedrolls. Because we don’t have many possessions we can afford to spend time or money making or purchasing beautifully embroidered bedspreads and vivid mirrored cushions for seating. Every object is a delight to the senses.

A handmade twelve string rests on a guitar stand, always ready for a musician to pick up and play, but the rest of the instruments are downstairs, in the climate-controlled cellar we dug below the yurt.

There, one wall (hidden by a large tapestry) is painted white to provide a projector screen for when we watch movies. The other walls are hung with artwork. There is a computer that I use for writing and my husband uses for recording music. The kids use it for their own projects as well, and it sometimes gets used for ordering plane tickets for another inspired trip.

There is also a bed because this is mine and my husband’s bedroom where we get to have privacy every now and then to conceive another baby, always testing the famous pronouncement of “the more the merrier.” So far it has held out.

Changing MY Life, One Card at a Time

I’ve always liked it, but I always thought of it as me sending out cards to change other peoples’ lives.

Today I realized that it works the other way around too – for the past 18 months or so, I have been changing MY life one card at a time.

I have learned to be aware of other people, their problems, joys and concerns, and send them cards and gifts of encouragement, inspiration, thanks and comfort.

Today, as I was putting the finishing touches to a very creative photo card that I was sending to a family we know, I realized that I have learned to GIVE so much more of myself with SendOutCards, and the more I have given, the more – more and more and more – I have received.

What would it look like, by the way, your dream lifestyle? How would it feel? Would you get up earlier than you do now, or later? Would you eat breakfast at home or go to a favorite place with your spouse and/or friends where everyone knows you?

What would you do with each day? Different things than you do now? Would you travel, play sports, eat out more, see shows, shop, spend time with family and/or friends?

What things would you be able to afford that are not in your budget today? Would you write a check, pay cash, or have your assistant take care of it (no need for credit cards when money’s no object).

Would you spend more time at your church, giving your time to charitable causes that touch your heart?

Maybe you haven’t given much thought to what living your dream lifestyle would feel like, and I hadn’t either until I saw the potential of SendOutCards.
